The Leftovers season 3 episode 6 spoilers: The story of Laurie

When The Leftovers season 3 episode 6 airs on HBO next week, the network will continue their recent tradition of presenting an array of different character-driven stories. Tonight, the tale is very much centered around Matt and what is effectively his pilgrimage to get his savior and try to bring him home. As for whether or not that happens, that’s a subject for the review later when further matters are explored.

For the sake of this article, the goal more is setting the table on next week’s installment entitled “Certified,” another title intentional chosen to reflect the main character of the story. Laurie has history in therapy, and in a sense, she’s done therapy for some of this season serving as the wizard-from-afar in John Murphy’s new business practice. She’s offered some advice packaged together as an enormous con job, letting people believe that they are communicating with people who have passed on.

In this episode, it looks as though she could be engaged in some real therapy, and in the process join the congregation that is starting to shore up on the other side of the world.

The Leftovers season 3 episode 6 synopsis – “Laurie Garvey (Amy Brenneman), a former therapist, must become one again as she heads to Australia to help Nora (Carrie Coon) and Kevin (Justin Theroux) along their paths.”

Even in synopses, the word choices from HBO are specific and deliberate. There are religious references in this article, and “their paths” reflects something similar here. These characters are on a journey, and where it takes them may surprise, shock, and hopefully compel you to consider the words and the actions. These characters may be fictional, but there is still a reflective quality to them.

For those looking for The Leftovers to delve into something a little more experimental in the vein of “International Assassin,” do not worry — this opportunity will present itself a little bit down the road with the upcoming seventh episode of the season. These stories should hopefully set the stage rather well for a powerful, incredible series finale.
