Stephen Colbert – Donald Trump feud continues on The Late Show
The Stephen Colbert – Donald Trump feud escalated on Thursday night’s The Late Show, and in one of the funniest ways possible.
Earlier today, Trump decided for some inexplicable reason to address the recent joke Colbert made about him and Vladimir Putin (you know, the one that led to actual Twitter boycotts) in a new interview with Time. As per usual, said comments including some insults of his own:
“You see a no-talent guy like Colbert … There’s nothing funny about what he says. And what he says is filthy. And you have kids watching. And it only builds up my base. It only helps me, people like him. The guy was dying. By the way they were going to take him off television, then he started attacking me and he started doing better. But his show was dying. I’ve done his show. … But when I did his show, which by the way was very highly rated. It was high — highest rating. The highest rating he’s ever had.”
There is one thing that is true within Trump’s statement — this sort of stuff probably does unify his base and their us-against-the-world mentality. However, it also unifies the base against him who now have a common adversary that was not so present in the election.
Now, the irony tour begins…
1. Is Colbert filthy? – His joke about Trump and Putin was a little crass for CBS; yet, do we need to go back to Trump’s locker-room talk? Is what Colbert said in jest worse than what Trump said in a conversation with Billy Bush? Probably not the right person to talk about being a role model.
Also, if kids are watching a talk show at 11:30, Colbert ain’t responsible for that.
2. Is Trump’s ratings proclamation right? – Nope. There are two shows with higher ratings — the Super Bowl special, and then also his very first show. The guest on that show? Ironically, Trump campaign adversary Jeb Bush.
Years ago, Trump used to falsely brag about The Apprentice being the highest-rated show on TV, as well — this very writer heard him do it on a conference call before. After he was called out for it, he then tried to blame “people” for telling him otherwise.
Watch Colbert’s response below — it’s glorious, especially where he openly admits with no shame that he just wanted Trump to acknowledge his existence.
