A cancellation flood: Dr. Ken, American Crime, Secrets & Lies, more over

Dr. Ken

Thursday proved itself to be the bloodiest day on television this year — more than a dozens shows felt the pain of cancellation. Sadly, there is probably more to come in the wake of today’s news, so keep the tears and the Twitter account nearby for rage-tweeting.

In addition to the shows mentioned earlier — which include The Catch, APB, Son of Zorn, and Making History, the following shows are now also officially over:

Dr. Ken (ABC) – The Ken Jeong sitcom brought a lot of laughs, but the cancellation of Last Man Standing largely cemented its own fate on the air.

Conviction (ABC) – Effectively, it ended earlier this year and there was zero hope for it from that moment onward. Seeing the news pour out now is a nail in a coffin full of nails.

Notorious (ABC) – See above.

The Real O’Neals (ABC) – It started strong a year ago, but faded fast this season and couldn’t get much momentum going beyond its base.

Powerless (NBC) – Funny comedy with a ton of potential and a great cast. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a fit for NBC and would’ve been much better in an edgier venue.

American Crime (ABC) – While critically-acclaimed, this only goes so far in ensuring that networks want to keep you around. The biggest Achilles’ heel for the series came courtesy of anemic Sunday ratings.

Imaginary Mary (ABC) – Interesting idea with CGI animation, but it never came together and ratings fell fast.

Secrets & Lies (ABC) – Maybe next time don’t take a year and a half off between seasons.

Notice how almost all of these shows were ABC; the network had itself a red wedding today, and this list could still include Quantico. The Priyanka Chopra series remains the most high-profile show on the bubble with the bulk of the rest of the schedule either renewed or canceled at this point.

To date, CBS remains one of the few networks to still be holding most of their cards. Their bubble shows include Elementary, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Code Black, and The Amazing Race. News on some of these shows and their futures may be made available tomorrow.
