The Catch season 3 dead; ABC show canceled before season 2 finale

The Catch season 3

Going into the finale tonight, there is some bad news for The Catch season 3 and the show’s future: It’s officially canceled.

What in the world happened? The cancellation is strictly a function of low ratings. Season 2 crashed in the overall numbers in comparison to the year before, and while most Shonda Rhimes series tend to last for a long time, that is not always the case. Remember for a moment or two that Off the Map previously was canceled after only one season, so there is some further precedence here than it may appear on the surface.

What makes this news especially sad is the timing of it all, given that the news is coming in on the same day as the finale airing. Undoubtedly, there are going to be many viewers watching tonight distracted by the news thanks that the show is ending. Trying to contend with that will be no easy task for the show or its viewers, so in that aspect, there’s little to do other than wish them luck.

Given the ratings and the close relationship that already exists between ABC and Rhimes, the odds of another network picking this up are slim to none. It’s difficult to see or imagine a scenario in which it happens. If a network were to save it, odds suggest it would be the one that already had it and put it on the air following Scandal, which is a pretty prime timeslot all things considered.

So where does this put ABC in terms of its returning programming? As of now, Once Upon a Time and Agents of SHIELD are two of the bubble series primed to continue. Most shows expected to be canceled are, and the big mystery now is tied to Quantico. Will the network choose to give the series starring Priyanka Chopra have new life? That’s a decision that could come a little bit later in the night; stay tuned!
