Underground season 3: Will it happen, and will it be on WGN America?
The good news is that there does appear to be a lot of passion out there among fans to bring the show back. It frequently trends worldwide on social media, which is incredibly impressive when you consider the fact that the series is airing on a network that doesn’t receive huge ratings. It’s also a show that is frequently on the periphery of awards-show consideration. Even if it doesn’t get a ton of nominations, it is still a show that’s in the conversation. Once again, that is different than many other WGN America properties.
Now, this is where things get a little bit hazy. As we recently reported, the biggest problem the show faces is one that is out of its control. WGN America was recently sold, and as a result of that, the new owners are not altogether keen on putting original programming on the network. It’s a little sad, but sometimes, television is a business more so than a creative endeavor.
With this in mind, it is not altogether clear at the moment if there will be a third season for the show. WGN America has not officially canceled it, but it does look as though the studio could be out looking for some other potential homes for it as well. While in this situation we’re not always confident that a show will find a new home, it’s a little bit of a different situation with Underground. We think that there are plenty of networks out there that could want a show with this loyal a following. The biggest thing that you have to hope for is that the viewer base does end up finding it wherever it lands. We think that there is hope for it on a streaming service, but then also maybe everywhere from History to Lifetime to BET to AMC. There are a wide array of different networks that could serve as a home.
