Taken renewed for season 2 by NBC; what this means for Timeless, others
According to Deadline, there was enough with the movie prequel starring Clive Standen to convince the network to give it another kick at the can, even though the live+same day ratings weren’t too much better than those of Chicago Justice, Timeless, or many other shows. It will have a 16-episode second season, which is a far larger order by comparison to what it had this time around.
One twist that is coming to Taken for season 2 is that showrunner Alex Cary is not expected to be retained; as a result of that, there will be a new showrunner who will take the reigns and we will see precisely what happens as we move the story forward.
So what does this news mean for some of the other NBC shows on the block? Don’t assume that this show being renewed means at all that Timeless is done. We felt for a while that it was a longshot that the Abigail Spencer series would air in the same Monday timeslot that it did in the fall, with Fridays at 8:00 p.m. Eastern being a more feasible destination. This is a show in need of more family viewers, and an earlier time would be to the benefit of them.
As for Chicago Justice or the rest of the One Chicago franchise, this doesn’t mean a whole lot else, either. The important thing to remember here is that There are some likely cancellations elsewhere — Emerald City is already done, Grimm is over, and it seems likely that The Blacklist: Redemption won’t have another chance to come on the air. The Blacklist proper may be in a little danger, but we feel like it’ll be renewed. There may be a tough cut or two that the network has to make, but the name recognition of Taken and the overseas prosperity that could come with that are both probably facets of its renewal that we have overlooked ever since the show first premiered.
