Saturday Night Live: Should Chris Pine episode ignore Donald Trump?

Pine

This weekend, Saturday Night Live is hosting a new episode hosted by Chris Pine with musical guest LCD Soundsystem. It’s also fair to say what one of the main subjects of the show is going to be: Donald Trump.

Of course, we get it. Mocking the President has become a bit of a national pastimes, and it’s easy — he is big, bombastic, and he says and does ridiculous things. We know that for many people out there, seeing like-minded individuals joke about him is a form of therapy, and there are many people out there who are scared. Specifically at this point, they may be scared of losing health coverage in some form.

So why suggest the mere idea of going an entire show spurning the name Trump altogether? It’s a controversial idea, but there is something rather powerful about saying something as opposed to saying everything. This could be a silent protest for the show to not give him the time of day, and that is something that President Trump seems to care about more than anything else.

Take, for example, the recent news about multiple networks declining to air an advertisement that is favorable to Trump policies and brandishes the media as “Fake News.” There is a reasonably good chance that those associated with the campaign knew that networks would decline to air an ad that was in direct opposition to their own purpose. Yet, they opted to put it out there anyway. You can easily make they argument that they were intentionally stoking the flame, hoping that they would get some publicity and further along an us vs. them mentality. Trump parodies aren’t turning Trump supporters around, and there are so many of them out there at this point.

Let’s also look at it this way — Alec Baldwin will be in the final two episodes this season on May 13 and May 20. Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy is hosting the former of those two shows. Suffice it to say, we’re going to get a lot of Trump and his minions. This could be a time for a break, to explore other interesting avenues and see what the show can do in a world not so clearly focused on a giant orange target living in the White House. The Trump spoofs have also started to sag due to over-exposure.

Do we think that SNL will go more than two sketches tonight without a Trump mention? Absolutely not, but it could add some much-needed balance to the season and also add more anticipation to the final shows. We do wish that they’d consider it.

Now, your take

Let us know in the comments if going a full SNL episode without a Trump mention is a good idea. Meanwhile, you can also click here for more news when it comes to the show, including another preview promo featuring Pine. (Photo: NBC.)
