Power season 4 showrunner Courtney A. Kemp signs new deal

Courtney A. Kemp

Odds are, you know already that Power season 4 is far from the end of the series. It’s already been renewed for season 5! Still, there is a little bit more validation that comes out of the fact that the top of the creative pyramid is staying put.

According to Deadline, Courtney A. Kemp has signed a new deal with Starz and their new parent company Lionsgate, one that allows her to continue on in her position with this series (which is also executive-produced by 50 Cent) while also developing some other projects for both this and other potential networks. The move signifies that Kemp is viewed as a visionary, and someone who could do big things for many years to come. If you have great talent, you want to keep them, and it doesn’t matter so much if you are talking about people in front of the camera or behind it.

In a statement, Kemp had the following to say, specifically referencing the likes of Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, Lionsgate TV Group head Kevin Beggs, Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik, and Starz president / CEO Chris Albrecht:

“This new deal presents a wonderful opportunity to extend my creative efforts on Power while developing new shows for Lionsgate … I am grateful to Jon, Kevin and Chris for this warm welcome to the Lionsgate family, and I’m looking forward to a continued relationship with Chris, Carmi and the entire team at Starz.”

We don’t get a sense that Power season 5 is going to be the end of the series, so we’ll see just how long this flagship series from Kemp lasts. It remains the network’s highest-rated series in live+same day, and it will be coming back on the air this summer. Through this deal, and consequently the writers’ strike that was thankfully avoided, we do hope that people start to realize and understand more than ever the specific and enormous value that writers bring to the table. After all, without them there is really no material for the cast to put out there. Power is a show with great performances, but the writing is what allows Omari Hardwick and company to have an opportunity to deliver.
