Going into into tonight’s finale is Line of Duty season 5 officially set in stone? Thanks to an official announcement from the BBC, it seems so.
The police drama was renewed a good while ago, and the biggest question at the moment is simply when it will come on the air. At present, our hope is that it will be back at some point in 2018, but there are no guarantees and British series in general tend to come back a little bit later than American shows. Sometimes, taking some time off enables the writers to come up with unique stories, and enables the cast to have a chance to do some other things. The big thing to celebrate, at least for now, is that there is more of the story coming.
One of the biggest assumptions that we’d make is that this marks the end of the road for Roz Huntley tonight, given that she’s the target of the AC-12 investigation as opposed to being an organic part of the series itself. It’s hard to see her story last; plus, Thandie Newton has another series in Westworld that will be taking up the bulk of her time moving forward.
In speaking per the Radio Times about the sort of story he wants to see unfold on the series moving forward, creator Jed Mercurio said the following:
“The fact is that Line of Duty has a very big story arc across all the series and one of the things that we haven’t done is to delve into Hastings’ past … That will happen in a future series.”
The good thing is that there are still many interesting story opportunities for the show, and the big thing that they have to try to devise are some of the ones that they want to highlight now, and then also some that they can save for the future. The good thing about the manner of storytelling in which the writers are opting for right now is that they are affording themselves many opportunities to keep the show on the air in the long-term. They’re not giving you everything right now about every character, and with short episode orders the series doesn’t necessarily feel like some sort of incredible commitment.
