Will Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD happen secure a season 5? As we’ve noted as of late, there was a time when we were feeling rather doubtful about its chances. Yet, the metaphorical ice is now starting to clear, and it’s feeling a little bit more like there could be a chance that it could come back.
Speaking per TVLine, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb said that the team is “hopeful” that the show is going to get a fifth season, and there are several reasons right now to feel the same. For one, the show’s ratings have recovered in recent weeks in the midst of the whole Framework storyline. Also, the site notes that the show is demonstrating some significant DVR gains as of late, more than doubling its ratings in many instances. That proves that there is still a thirst for people to watch the show — just not always live.
What also helps Agents of SHIELD is that it’s a part of a rich streaming deal, and that allows it to accumulate a little bit more money that way. It’s popular around the world, and the partnership between Marvel and ABC only helps things further.
Ultimately, ABC has until May to make their decision, and we do remain confident that the scales will tip in the show’s favor just because it’s a valuable franchise to keep around, at least for one more season. Our suggestion remains to give it a shorter season of 13-15 episodes, and then air it after Inhumans wraps up its run in the familiar timeslot. Maybe this could be a blessing given that it would tighten up the story further, and also give many of its cast and crew a chance to relax … something that they haven’t had a lot of time to do over the past four years. Just remember the long hours that the show requires, especially for many of those outdoor action shoots.
There are still several more episodes of Agents of SHIELD season 5, so we’ll see how some of those end up faring in the ratings. It’s possible ABC is holding on to a similar philosophy.
