Is Moriarty returning in the Elementary season 5 finale? We cannot say that for certain just yet, but today CBS released some of the first details from the upcoming May 21 finale (which still doesn’t have a name). What the synopsis below tells us is that we’re going to see some sort of notable name turning back up in the midst of a case that they are investigating:
“Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) pursue an elusive criminal as a gang war erupts in New York City. While the NYPD works to contain the violence, the two investigate the murder that appears to have ignited the city-wide conflict, and discover that a familiar face is pulling the strings.”
Is it possible that the series may have something else planned here besides Moriarty? We suppose that they could plot some sort of shocking situation where it’s Shinwell, but to us the words “pulling the strings” fit right into the Moriarty mold given that this is precisely what she loves to do. Nobody is as brilliant when it comes to being manipulative and working the angles from afar. It’s what makes her stand out, and what makes her such an interesting figure.
Granted, it’s possible that Moriarty could be behind this murder, and the show could figure out a way to tell the story without casting Natalie Dormer in the role. For years, Elementary has been forced into a dilemma that stemmed from casting an actress of Natalie Dormer’s caliber in the role. She’s tremendous, but she’s also tremendously busy. The only hope here is that (Game of Thrones spoiler alert) Margaery Tyrell dead, there may be a little bit more time to spotlight this character than there was previously. Granted, Dormer does also have a robust movie career, and that is another thing that the writers for the show are going to need to consider as they plot out the remainder of the story this season.
