The Leftovers season 3 spoilers: Justin Theroux on series finale ending

With the premiere of The Leftovers season 3 coming up on HBO this Sunday, it makes sense to be excited about what could happen on the show. Not only that, but there are also some reasons to be excited about the series finale … or nervous. Much of that depends on your vantage point.

We will be one of the first people out there to admit that we were among the few that was happy with the end of Damon Lidnelof’s last series in Lost. With that, we’re actually not nervous at all with how The Leftovers is going to end following its final eight episodes. Even if we were, though, series star Justin Theroux is doing his part to make it very clear that we really shouldn’t be. Speaking to E! News, here is what he had to say:

“I don’t think it’s controversial. I think our show does a thing where you expect it to zig and it always zags, so it definitely, I think, does that to a certain extent, but without giving anything away I can say when I read the script I was completely moved and thought it was a beautiful, beautiful way to end our show.”

In some ways, we do think that the end of the series could have been a year or two down the road, and it still would not have overstayed his welcome. With that said, we still give the team all of the kudos in the world for being brave enough to end things now while they are still riding high. If Lindelof knows the perfect way to end the show, we’ll have faith in him that he will pull it off.

Of course, it is pretty ironic that we’re talking about faith in a show that touches on both religion and a lack of religion at the same time. We have an apocalypse without cause or explanation, and most indications suggest that the series will keep things that way in its entirety. There have never been any plans to explain what happens with the departure at the center of the series.
