Switched at Birth season 6: Should a revival ever happen?

Switched at Birth season 6

Is there hope for a Switched at Birth season 6 even following tonight’s series finale? We like to plant our flag definitively in the never-say-never camp. If you have a great show, you never want to write it off completely.

For the time being, though, let’s not get TOO far ahead of ourselves. The series finale tonight is meant to be just that — the end of the series. This wasn’t announced by Freeform in that way just so that a month down the road, they can order another season and confuse the heck out of people. They have plenty of time in order to figure out if they want to do something more with the property, and they won’t be in any hurry to make that happen. The ratings this season are down pretty big (at least in live+same day figures) from season 4, but we don’t know what the network expected given the extremely long layoff between seasons.

So how would you bring back Switched at Birth in the event that you did? With this show and this set of characters, we actually think a format fairly similar to Gilmore Girls could work. Maybe you make a limited run of 4-6 episodes, and show an update as to where some of these people are in life. Or, you can condense it further and craft a TV movie or something of that ilk.

What this show has that makes it special, and would lead to there being some demand for it down the road, is its message of inclusion and hope. Specifically, we mean this in terms of the deaf community. Even today with more representation on TV than arguably ever before, there are few other shows that cater to this audience and celebrate their achievements. This show shines a light on the community and offers inspiration. It does so in a way that is entertaining, and feels hopeful rather than trying to needlessly pander to an audience. If the messages of Switched at Birth are ever forgotten, you can bring the show back and reinforce them further.

In the end, we’ll see what happens a few years from now when the dust settles on Switched at Birth the series. Maybe you get a season 6, or maybe that season just exists in our imagination. After all, you have to envision that the lives of Bay, Daphne, and many other characters will not end just because we get some closing credits.
