Once Upon a Time season 7 renewal: Do latest ratings hurt its chances?

Once Upon a Time season 7 renewal

Is a Once Upon a Time season 7 renewal in jeopardy? While we wouldn’t go that far, there is a certain degree of danger that the show is facing based on Sunday night’s ratings.

The numbers for the episode were the lowest in the show’s history — at least in terms of the 0.7 that it posted in the 18-49 demographic. We’ve seen it slowly decline throughout the season, making it all the clearer that there is something within this current story that viewers are not responding to all that well. To us, we don’t find the Gideon plot all that appealing, and thematically it feels like we’re touching on some things we’ve already hit on time and time again.

With that being said, the Black Fairy is a pretty incredible villain, and we’re all for her sticking around as long as she wants. If the writers can find a way to connect this to almost everything else, more power to them.

Even though there have been negotiations going on between the network and several of the show’s stars (including Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Colin O’Donoghue, and Robert Carlyle), ABC is still the one who has to officially order new episodes. That’s not something that they’ve done officially as of yet, and we could have another Castle situation where the network decides at the last minute to not pick it up.

Personally, we hope this doesn’t happen, and we’d be fine if the network decided to opt for a 10-13 episode final season for the fall where you bring back many beloved characters and come up with a proper way to send it off. We’d obviously want more in theory, but beggars can’t be choosers and it does feel like we’re inching ever closer to the end of the road here. Were it not for the fact that ABC’s entire Sunday lineup is in shambles, and the same could arguably go for their 10:00 p.m. timeslot on both Monday and Tuesday, the show would be in even more danger than it is.

In the end, you’re going to get a chance to learn about the show’s future come May, which is when the network is holding its upfront presentation.
