Saturday Night Live with Louis CK, Alec Baldwin posts okay ratings

Louis CK

While the Saturday Night Live episode last night featuring host Louis CK with special appearances from Alec Baldwin was funny, we may be starting to get our first real sign that some of the buzz is finally starting to cool off in terms of both the show and the famed Donald Trump impression.

Last night’s new episode drew in total a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is one of the lowest ratings of the season. While it is up slightly versus the 1.9 average that the show generated in the month of April last year, it is still noticeable that we’re seeing it down close to the 2.0 level once more.

One of the biggest things that likely caused the lower ratings for last night’s show is simply the long layoff that was there between episodes. The last time that SNL aired, it was back during the first part of March. It’s possible that many viewers either never realized that the show was coming back on the air, or just simply forgot about it. Both are reasonable possibilities in their own way. Of course, we’re also getting closer to a time when there are other things people can go out and do at this point beyond just sitting around and watching television on a late Saturday night.

There are several interesting things that could change starting with the show next week, and they begin with the fact that for the first time ever, the show is going to be live across every time zone for host Jimmy Fallon and musical guest Harry Styles. This means theoretically that you could see some of the biggest numbers for the West Coast that we’ve seen in a rather long time. Not only is it on fairly early there, but they are not going to get spoiled. This live format is apparently something that we’re going to see NBC continuing to play and experiment with for a little while, at least until we get to the end of the season with Dwayne Johnson. In between Fallon and Johnson’s shows, you’re also going to have two in May hosted by Chris Pine and Melissa McCarthy. Suffice it to say, there is potential for some big ratings by the time the season comes to an end.
