In a post on Twitter last week, series star Brenda Blethyn (who plays the incomparable DCI Vera Stanhope on the series) made it clear that Vera season 8 will begin filming in June, meaning that there is probably going to be no interruption with either the series or the way that it airs. Odds are, the next batch of episodes will air at some point in the late winter / early spring of 2018.
One of the great things about a show like Vera is that it does have this wonderful timeless quality to it. This is one of those shows where you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy new episodes at your own leisure, without any fear of missing out or that something important is going to be spoiled for you if you miss a week. The episodes and the mysteries largely stand on their own, but are still compelling and addictive at the same time. The ratings are also consistently solid, so you don’t have to be overly concerned with the notion of it going anywhere so long as the cast and crew continue to want to make them.
What may also help us to get to a Vera season 8 is the notion that the market is not exactly saturated at the moment with episodes. Remember here that there are only four episodes in a season, and that is not so many that anyone is going to get overly tired of the series. You start to get hooked in on the episodes, you burn through the four, and then there is a long period of waiting and anticipation before the next batch of episodes comes around. This is a show that does take its time before coming back, but it always proves to be worth it.
As a result of the episodes not even being filmed yet, it’s hard to offer up any further scoop on what is coming next. Odds are, there will be a little bit more in the way of news on that by the time we get around to early 2018.
