Saturday Night Live music: The Chainsmokers perform ‘Paris,’ ‘Break Up Every Night’

Chainsmokers

Going into this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, we had very few expectations for The Chainsmokers, mostly because we know little about their music. What we did know was that they were a band that did have a big hit last year, and they were tailor-made for this show given that they do love to take on acts that are current, and acts that encompass a wide array of genres.

The great that about the song “Paris” was that it was incredibly catchy, and the staging and the lighting was set up in a really cool way. It’s hard to make good use of the SNL stage, given that it’s not very big and there’s only so much room that people have to shift around on the stage. The one thing that was a small issue was with the sound mix, given that the vocals were loud enough to hear what was said the majority of the time over the band. For a neophyte to the group like us, you do want to hear what they’re saying since this could influence us to want to hear more of them.

For now, though, we’ll give the Chainsmokers some praise for managing to come and deliver a performance that was fun and probably played well to their fans.

Second Performance – This was “Break Up Every Night,” a song that showed some of what the group did well, but also one that did expose some of the vocal limitations. Once again, though, we’ll give them some credit for finding some further ways to disguise some of that. They used the energy and the catchy flair of the song to reel you in.

As a whole, we’d say that the two performances from the Chainsmokers tonight were very solid, but maybe not something that mainstream SNL fans will remember a few weeks from tonight. The biggest thing that we’ll credit them for is figuring out a way to keep things fast-paced and exciting on a show that came in with a lot of promise thanks to its host in Louis CK plus the presence of Alec Baldwin.

What did you think about the performance from The Chainsmokers on Saturday Night Live? Share in the comments! Hopefully, we’ll have video from the performance tomorrow.
