When Legends of Tomorrow season 3 airs on The CW, we now know of one thing that you will be seeing: More Arthur Darvill! While we were absolutely concerned for Rip Hunter’s future following the events of the season 2 finale earlier this week, it’s looking more and more as though there are some plans to see him in some further form moving forward into the future.
Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio, executive producer Marc Guggenheim made it clear that, provided everything stays the same right now moving into the third season, there are hopes that Darvill will be turning up once more … even if he’s not a firm member of the Legends anymore:
“We’ve got plans for Rip for next year … It’s just in a different capacity than him being a member of the team.”
Our wonder is if you use him similar to a Jay Garrick on The Flash, someone who turns up here and there and offers up an opportunity to give insight or demonstrate some skills in a moment of crisis. There is no guarantee that Darvill will be a regular, after all, so this may just be a situation where he turns up a few times in some unexpected ways.
In the end, we’re probably okay with more of a reserved role for Rip Hunter given that the character was far better in the second season, and someone we even loved and looked forward to seeing on the show. His cake-building scenes during “Doomsworld” may have been one of the best parts of the entire season! As of right now we’d assume that the remainder of the team is still going to be around, at least in terms of the season 2 crew. We’ll see if that changes.
For now, it does appear as though the stories are done for both Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher), given that these two guys are both dead in the present. Darhk was placed back into his previous timeline with his memory wiped. Malcolm Merlyn is now back in the present, so we’ll see what his own future holds.
