New Girl season 7: Renewal odds, potential Fox premiere date hopes

Is a New Girl season 7 renewal possible going into Tuesday night’s season 6 finale? We certainly feel like it’s something that could happen, but whether or not it will is an entirely different story.

As a matter of fact, you’ve probably heard already at the moment some of the quotes from series star Jake M. Johnson (Nick Miller) that suggest that there may not be another season. The show’s ratings for the season aren’t great, as it is averaging just a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s down just over 15% from the season before.

Yet, when you look more towards the bigger picture for the series, things may not look nearly as bad overall. Remember for a minute or two that many of Fox’s other comedies, whether it be a Brooklyn Nine-Nine or a The Mick, are also bringing in ratings in a similar range. The same goes for The Last Man on Earth. Of these comedies, The Mick is the only one with a confirmed renewal, but we feel like all three will get at least one more season … or so they should.

The biggest case for a New Girl season 7 is probably legacy more so than anything else. At the time in which it first premiered, this show was an instant ratings hit. It didn’t maintain those numbered, but this really ushered in a new era of single-camera comedy for the network that’s led to so many other great shows. They’ve done almost what NBC was doing back in the era of The Office, Parks and Recreation, and 30 Rock — their shows weren’t necessarily ratings monsters, but they did a good job of being solid contributors that drew immense critical acclaim.

Unfortunately, we’re now at the point where we will be left waiting for a few weeks presumably to determine what the future of New Girl will be. There’s no obvious hurry for Fox to make a decision, given that upfronts are in May and there’s little reason for them to figure things out one way or another before then. It’s possible that there will be an announcement before then, but there aren’t unfortunately any guarantees on the subject.

Premiere date speculation – If the show does return, we don’t see any reason for Fox to move away from starting the season off in the fall. That seems to be what works the best for them. The only time they’ve really changed it is because of Zooey deschanel’s pregnancy.
