The Mindy Project season 6 to be final season, Hulu confirms

The Mindy Project

Yesterday, we wrote about how The Mindy Project was likely near the end of its run, but how it could use one more season on the air to wrap up some of its stories and strut off into the sunset.

Now, we’re pleased to report that this is officially happening. According to Entertainment Weekly, Hulu will renew the show for a sixth and final season, which should offer up the characters closure and tie a knot around what’s been a signature piece of the streaming provider ever since they picked the show up after Fox’s cancellation. This is what Kaling had to say to the website on the subject:

“I mean this half-jokingly, but at a certain point it was like, I think she’s dated every man in Manhattan … Sex and the City lasted for, what, six seasons with 10 episodes each? I don’t know that there’s been a show about a woman trying to find love in New York City that has lasted quite this long. And frankly, there’s no more actors in Hollywood left to date … We [ultimately] started this series when she was single, and now she’s married and has a kid and she has a stepdaughter, and it kind of just felt like [a few] more episodes was all we needed to wind this down.”

The final season of The Mindy Project is going to be premiering on Hulu this September, so you’ve got a little bit of time now before the series winds down.

This announcement comes at a time in which Kaling is going to be very busy working on some other projects in addition to this one. We’ve already reported that she is developing a new series over at NBC, one where she could potentially recur depending on whether or not it gets picked up. There’s a whole lot to look forward to in terms of her comedy, but sometimes you have to let new things end in order to move forward and see what some of the other exciting possibilities out there are.

For the time being, tell us: Do you think that the timing is right to end The Mindy Project? Are there more interesting stories left to tell within that world? Share some of your thoughts now in the comments! (Photo: Hulu.)
