Longmire season 6: Lou Diamond Phillips directing
In a post on Twitter, Phillips confirmed that he is in New Mexico already (where the series films); not only that, but he is directing the second episode of the final season! This will mark the first Longmire episode for Phillips as director. Previously, we’ve seen him helm episodes of the Twilight Zone revival (the 2002-2003 edition) and The Outer Limits. Of course, he will continue to play the part of Henry Standing Bear, and this gig could ultimately mean that he will have the challenge of trying to direct himself on occasion. We’ve certainly heard from many other actor-directors over the years that this is no easy task.
There are ten episodes once more in Longmire season 6, and filming will take place in the Santa Fe area for much of the next several months. As per usual, the writers / producers are being tight-lipped on what to expect, including whether or not there will be any sort of time jump. The finale ended with Phillips’ Henry in a precarious life-or-death position thanks to Malachi Strand, so we probably should say that it’s not a guarantee Phillips will be directing himself as a result of that. Henry has to find a way to survive first for that to happen! These ten episodes have the enormous challenge of finding a way to provide closure, while also cultivating a story in its own right that offers up some excellent crime drama and captures the essence of the source material. We feel pretty confident that the show will pull it off.
New episodes of Longmire will likely premiere in September, but the ball’s totally in Netflix’s court on that one. It’s mostly the job of Phillips and the rest of the cast to go out, film the episodes, and then wait and see what the streaming provider wants to do with the episodes once they’re all officially in the can.
