Rachel Maddow to highlight Donald Trump 2005 tax return on MSNBC tonight

Rachel Maddow -

Apparently, tonight is suddenly going to be the political TV event of the month … and it’s thanks to a Donald Trump tax return.

In a post on Twitter, Rachel Maddow of MSNBC claims that she has a return from President Trump (specifically, a 1040 from 2005) that she is going to broadcast on her show at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time tonight. We’re not going to dive into the political side of things too much here, but this could easily be something that upsets the apple cart extremely depending on what is actually in it. The historical context is that throughout Trump’s campaign, he has repeatedly refused to show his returns. He originally said that he would do so after the election, but has since declined against it and decided that he no longer has any interest in doing so.

There’s been buzz about this happening for some time, and of course, hyping this up is in part a commercial move by Maddow and MSNBC in order to bring ratings to the show. It’s already fairly easy in order to imagine what the Trump response to this could be — it’s a tax return from more than ten years ago — but it’s certainly information that some people want to know.

It’s not really our place to speculate how much will come out of this, and given that we are an entertainment site, one of the things that we’re actually the most curious about here is precisely how many viewers could this special retrieve in the limited out of time between now and when the show airs. Maddow only made the announcement about an hour and a half before the start of the show, and that’s not exactly giving her a whole lot of time in order to get the word out there. (Then again, the tweet below does have more than 50,000 retweets, and that’s just at the time of this writing.) That number’s probably escalated already past 60,000 in the time it’s taken us to write up this article.

If there’s something else to share later that is relevant to the site, we’ll provide it for you then. (Reminder: We deal with matters on TV more so than major political events.)
