March 9, 2017 ratings: The Catch season 2 ties The Blacklist: Redemption; Scandal drops

It’s spring, so that means one thing more so than anything else: Time to watch some of the remaining shows on TV commence their slow descent into the ground.

When it comes to The Catch season 2 premiere ratings, we’re basically starting in the ground. With a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the series starring Mireille Enos fell from its season 1 premiere by a rather hefty margin. This was a show that never had the ratings of another Shondaland project in How to Get Away with Murder, and therefore it was never expected to be huge. (Personally, though, we thought that it could at least break a 1.0 for its first airing on the year.) #TGIT is by and large still a powerful lineup, but this show didn’t even have an isolated victory on the night.

This brings us over to The Blacklist Redemption, which generated a 0.8 that was down versus its recent episode … but that was also understandable when you consider the lineup. Last week, the spin-off and Chicago Med were aided by airing after a special episode of The Voice. That didn’t happen this time, since they followed a new Powerless that in turn aired following a repeat airing of something else. What we’re trying to say here is pretty darn simple: Lead-ins still matter.

For those who didn’t catch it (yep, The Catch pun clearly intended here), the Chicago Med rating from last night was a 1.2. Hopefully, we’ll get a small increase next week as the show tries to move forward towards a season 2 renewal.

Winners and caveats

The big champion last night was The Big Bang Theory, though a 2.8 rating for this show is still a shell of its former self. There was a time when we were seeing Sheldon and company easily get above a 4.0 rating almost every week. The ratings are down over 12% in the demo this season, but the decline in total viewers is only around 4%. In other words, the majority of the people bailing on the show are the ones who are watching it live.

Also, Grey’s Anatomy drew a 1.9, which is a smaller rating than it’s accustomed to as of late. For the most part, though, this show is almost even versus its season 12 averages, which proves further that this show is in fact Shonda Rhimes’ bread and butter more than any other.
