How will ‘Power’ season 4 fare against ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7?

Power -

Thanks to the recent news that “Outlander” is going to be premiering on Starz with its third season in September, this helps to cement one other thing in terms of the network’s upcoming programming: When you are almost certainly going to be seeing “Power” season 4 come on the air. All signs, at least for the time being, point towards a summer launch, either in late June or early July. There’s no real reason to wonder about particular days right now.

Instead, we want to frame this question around the following: The competition that is coming courtesy of “Game of Thrones.” The HBO drama is likely going to be airing within the “Power” ten-episode run this summer, and with that presents the most significant ratings challenge that the show has seen so far. We’re talking here about a show that is the #1 scripted drama series on Starz. It’s one that the network clearly loves so much that they’ve already renewed it for a season 5, and it’s one that we personally enjoy covering.

It’s because of this competition that we could see the ratings for the show staying fairly steady year-to-year for the first time since the beginning of its run. This is notable just because it’s not something that we think would happen otherwise. The ratings for “Power” have been an escalator so far, and deservedly show — it’s a thrilling, well-written series that gives you complex characters and relies on them rather than any other established gimmick.

Do the drama and “Game of Thrones” share a big audience? That’s something that is hard to get a read on, given that on paper, the two cover very different subject matter. Yet, at the same time both are high-quality, super-dramatic shows. People want to watch good TV (who does it?), and we can imagine people with the money to subscribe to Starz also subscribing to HBO.

The answer as to if one show hurts the other is going to be on our mind from now until this summer, but for the time being, we want to throw this over to you. What are you going to be watching more of this summer: “Game of Thrones” or “Power”? Share some of your thoughts below, and head over here to check out some further news right now when it comes to the show!
