‘American Idol’ revival being considered — at NBC, not Fox

The news -

It was only one year ago that Fox was closing the door on “American Idol” with an epic farewell season, but even still, the folks over at NBC are considering bringing the show back.

As first reported by Variety, the network is considering a pitch from Fremantle Media in order to revive the long-running singing show, which was at one point one of the biggest shows on television. This does make some sense, given that Frementle has a good relationship with NBC already (they work on “America’s Got Talent” together) and that “American Idol” was still drawing decent ratings by current network TV standards at the time in which it went off the air. These are encouraging signs for the show if we’re going to look towards whether or not it is going to have a significant future on the air.

In order to make this move happen, though, it could require a sacrifice from NBC, as they would need to cut down on “The Voice” from two cycles to one over the course of the year. Personally, we’re fine with that given that “The Voice,” while a good entertainment show, is a little more disposable when it comes to its legacy. Part of the joy that comes from watching singing shows should be the story of a star being born. The story of “The Voice” has yet to be defined by that; we’ve come to know people like Blake Shelton and Adam Levine better, but this story can still be told once a year, and this may actually help the series retain coaches longer given that it is less of a commitment.

Granted, if “Idol” does return, it does need to find ways to be a bit more contemporary, and not exist within a bubble that was only relevant a decade or so ago before YouTube and social media.

Do you think a revival of “American Idol” could work, and should it be considered a big thing? Share some of your thoughts now with a comment! Rest assured that we will have some further news when it comes to this potential idea when they are available. (Photo: Fox.)
