TV Revivals: Another case for ‘Chuck’ season 6

Chuck -This month, we’re in the midst of our second annual TV Revivals series, and with that the time feels right to provide a few updates on some shows that we wrote about previously the first go-around. One of these said shows is “Chuck,” which still remains a top 10 show all time for us in terms of pure entertainment and happiness — it’s one of those few shows that we could watch time and time again and never get bored, just because there was such a spirit of fun and a celebration of nerd culture about it. It made you feel better on a bad day, and there is such a soft spot that we all have in our hearts for these sort of sunny-day shows that give you a little bit of hope and laughter … while also watching dangerous spy missions.

So what are the odds of it coming back now? We’re not altogether sure that much has changed in the past year, but there is still hope — and there are still some venues that make some sense.

How to bring it back – We’ll start with a little venting: “Chuck” is not available on Netflix anymore. As someone who binge-watched the first two seasons again a couple of years ago, this was a dagger to the heart to learn. What gives, Netflix? The crummy thing about this is that it’s harder to make a case to someone to bring the show back when there aren’t many venues available for new viewers to watch it beyond just going to Amazon and buying individual episodes / seasons.

Still, we don’t want to let that get in the way of the dream here! We do think that if Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak came back with an interesting story, there would be some venues that would at least explore it … and Netflix could be one of them. What you could do is either go the Revival Movie route, or opt for a short season of 4-6 episodes that picks the story back up, and offers up some relief to fans who were concerned about whether or not Chuck and Sarah would stay together after the events of the series finale. We always viewed that ending with a hopeful lens, that the two characters were meant to be together and therefore she’d fall back in love with him as he helped her rebuild many of her memories. With that said, we get that there are no guarantees. Beyond the story’s main relationship, we also would certainly want to know where people like Morgan Grimes, John Casey, and Jeffster are so many years removed. How many of them are still affiliated with the Buy More? Interestingly, it’s Amazon that is clearly its biggest competition as a corporate entity.

One other thing for potential suitors to consider now is that the ratings for the final season (which included a 1.3 in the 18-49 demo for its series finale) look pretty good when you look at most of the numbers that shows are getting now on Friday nights. There is a viable audience out there for it who would glad watch more of these characters.

Could it happen? – Every attempt to revive a show is a swing for the fences, and this one therefore is no different. There are so many pieces that have to fall into place. For example, you have to get the cast and the producers all available, which is difficult when you have people like Adam Baldwin and Yvonne Strahovski working as regulars on other shows. Fedak, meanwhile, is both working on “Legends of Tomorrow” and developing new projects. Just because the show is now more than five years removed from being on the air, it does feel like it’s facing an even steeper uphill battle than most — but, “Gilmore Girls” made it back on the air, and that was something that didn’t feel possible at one point.

We’ve said this in some other TV Revivals articles, and it bears repeating — we’re in a contentious, divided time in history, and no matter who you are and where you come from, we like to think you’d agree that we all need a little more fun in our lives. This show and so many other like it are a beacon for that. Even if a show like “Chuck” doesn’t come back, we do hope that this is something networks consider in pilot season.
