‘The Young Pope’ episode 8 preview: Tackling loss

The Young Pope -

Maybe you can argue that HBO is not concerned with “The Young Pope” sharing an audience with the Super Bowl tonight. Or, maybe they just know that live ratings don’t matter when it comes to premium cable. Either way, the Jude Law drama aired a new episode tonight, and it is going to stay firm with that schedule moving into the next new episode of the show. There will be an installment airing tomorrow night, and this could be an especially emotional one when you think for a minute about what what Lenny is going to be going through — and he’s not going to be the only one.

This has been a story at times of revelations, and trying to change a culture in a way that only this character could. However, this upcoming episode could touch on some themes that are a little more universal; they may just be tackled in a very different, interesting way.

Synopsis – “Lenny (Jude Law) and Sister Mary (Diane Keaton) deal with a shared loss in their own peculiar ways. Returning to the Vatican, Sofia (Cécile De France) suggests that the new pope embark on his first trip abroad: a visit to Africa in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sister Antonia’s (Milvia Marigliano) much-heralded “Village of Goodness.” Lenny is heartened by a visit from his favorite author, and dismayed by the sudden departure of a friend.”

As we move into this episode, you do have to be cognizant of the end that is in sight. Will we have a satisfying conclusion, and the construction of a period of peace? If there’s one thing that the Vatican thrives on, it is stability and consistency. Hopefully, they’ll get a chance to have that, and will get a satisfying conclusion to a complicated, at-times polarizing story. (HBO’s scheduling of the show still has us raising an eyebrow.)
