‘Supergirl’ season 2 spoilers: Teri Hatcher cast as next Big Bad

Supergirl -

The second season of “Supergirl” is a show with many different strengths, but so far, one of its larger weaknesses has been its inability to bring forward a lot of notable, powerful villains.

Well, the show may now be finding a way to do just that. Today, the show announced that “Desperate Housewives” alum Teri Hatcher is being brought on, and she is going to be playing someone who will end up being the major villain of the second half of the season. There are not many more details available beyond this, but there is a clear connection to the Superman universe already given that she starred alongside Dean Cain in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” (Cain is already on the series in the role of Jeremiah Danvers.) What’s also interesting is that there is another reunion here given that Mehcad Brooks, who plays James Olsen on the show, also had a part of “Desperate Housewives.”

In a statement confirming the news, “Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had the following to say:

“No offense to any of the wonderful actresses who have also played the part, but Teri Hatcher is my all time favorite Lois Lane … To have her come back to the SuperWorld in a completely different part is an unbelievable gift to me, [EP] Greg [Berlanti], and the fans.”

We certainly think that Hatcher will bring a lot to the show and to this role, whatever it may be. Our feeling, though, is that the part is going to need to be a psychological adversary for Kara Danvers just as much as it is a physical one, given the fact that Supergirl is so gifted in terms of her powers that she is almost impossible to stop via those traditional means alone.

This is a show that definitely does have a pattern of casting great women for villainous roles. Laura Benanti was fantastic as Astra on the show last season, and we certainly enjoyed the run of Italia Ricci as Siobhan Smythe, otherwise known as the Silver Banshee.
