Ratings: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ airs strongest episode in over a year; ‘Riverdale’ starts okay

Grey's AnatomyEven though there were a number of different shows on the air Thursday night, it just so turns out that the one we’re discussing the most right now in the ratings is one that’s been on for well over a decade at this point in “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The winter premiere episode drew in total a very strong 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic, making it the show’s best performance of the entire season. Not only that, this is its best number since the start of season 12, and that’s crazy given that there is so much competition now and most shows erode over time. It’s even more remarkable given that this was an episode of “Grey’s” that really only featured three main characters in Miranda, Jo, and Arizona. Still, consider this to be another push that ensures that the drama gets itself a season 14 renewal.

As for the rest of #TGIT – “Scandal” premiered to a very solid 2.1 rating, and this helped to lift up “How to Get Away with Murder” to a 1.5, its best rating of the season. When it comes to “Scandal,” the 2.1 is the best rating it’s seen since February, and the best number overall since February of last year. In other words, the hiatus didn’t scare people away!

Fox – “Hell’s Kitchen” (1.2) and “My Kitchen Rules” (0.8) were about even with last week — we still feel like the network has to be thrilled with these performances given that they’re just as good if not better than what the network was pulling in the fall. Plus, they’re probably far cheaper to make than “Rosewood” or “Pitch.”

The CW – “Supernatural” came back with a 0.7 rating, which seems to be very much in its established wheelhouse. Meanwhile, the premiere of “Riverdale” followed with a 0.5, which is on the higher end of their recent premieres for non-superhero shows. If it stays around there the rest of the way, we consider it a lock to come back for more episodes. Remember that “Jane the Virgin” averages around a 0.3-0.4 and it tends to come back.

Alas, there were no new episodes on either NBC or CBS, so there’s not much to report on beyond a Mary Tyler Moore special on CBS drawing a 0.8 rating. May she rest in peace. (Photo: ABC.)
