‘Saturday Night Live’: Why Jamie Dornan should host in season 42

SNL -We love “Saturday Night Live,” and for so many reasons — it’s timely, it’s funny, and it fosters creativity in a way that few other shows do. Also, it allows for a unique opportunity to get a new host in the doors every time an episode airs. No other show has this degree of variance!

In the past, we’ve written specific articles listing off people that should host the NBC sketch series in the past, so what we’re going to do instead moving forward into the next several weeks is cultivate new articles through our SNL Wishlist series, ones that allow us to dive more into why certain people should get the gig. The only real requirement that we have is that these prospective hosts, whether it be through the past or the present, need to have some sort of connection to television already.

In kicking off this series, we’re looking in the direction of a man in Jamie Dornan who we first came to know for “The Fall” and “Once Upon a Time” — we know that most people out there likely know him best now for playing Christian on “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Fifty Shades Darker.”

Why he should host – For one, it’s fun sometimes to see actors who are known for being dramatic take on a role that allows them to be silly and very personable. We know that Dornan has that capacity, judging from some of his appearances on “The Graham Norton Show” or here in America on some of our late-night comedy shows. The video below from Jamie on “Graham Norton” is especially hysterical, and you get to see a lot of his true personality shine through. He can do physical comedy, and we get the sense that he would be more than game to make fun of himself. That’s always a requirement.

Jamie would also be able to bring to the show a very different perspective as someone who is not from America — basically, a reminder of how the rest of the world sees us. In this particular age politically, there is a lot to mine from that when it comes to material.

Why “SNL” should want him – For one, the timing couldn’t be better. With “Fifty Shades Darker” hitting theaters next month, hiring Dornan gives the show a chance to play into what’s going on in pop culture. They’ve already had his co-star Dakota Johnson take part in the show, so you also get a chance to see her make a cameo appearance if she’s available. You play into the enormous “Fifty Shades” crowd, and maybe you draw some particularly strong ratings overseas.

The one downside is that “SNL” already has their next two hosts booked in Kristen Stewart (February 4) and Alec Baldwin (February 11). Still, couldn’t you find the time to do something beyond that? The movie would still be relevant on February 18 if Jamie were to host then; personally, we wouldn’t mind when he hosts just so long as he got an opportunity to do so.
