Ratings: ‘Arrow’ season 5 falls in return; ‘Hunted’ predictably drops big on CBS

Why are all the CW superhero shows on the decline this week?

We wanted to wait for the entire week to play out before we called it a trend, but it is starting to look that way today. “Arrow” season 5 last night drew one of its lowest ratings to date in a 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic, which puts it right with “Legends of Tomorrow” in terms of its numbers. Meanwhile, both “The Flash” and “Supergirl” failed to get a 1.0 rating in preliminary ratings, and “Legends” may have only been as high as it was this time because of having “The Flash” as a stronger lead-in.

There may be a little bit of viewer fatigue that is coming into play here with these shows, but we suspect more than anything else that there were a small group of casual viewers who don’t watch any other CW shows, and didn’t necessarily have a great sense that they were all even coming on last night. We’ll see where the ratings are moving into the next new episode.

As for some other ratings on the night…

Fox – “Lethal Weapon” continued to be the network’s biggest warrior in terms of the demo with a 1.4. Meanwhile, “Star” followed it up with a 1.2, which is the first time this season that the show has been relatively steady in terms of retaining its overall viewer total.

CBS – In its second and third airings, “Hunted” drew a 1.3 and a 1.4 rating in the demo, which is of course a huge drop from where it was on Sunday night. However, at the same time this is a strong enough performance that if it stays at around this level, it could come back for another season. Think of that as a hopeful sign. “Code Black,” meanwhile, remains firmly on the bubble with a 0.9.

ABC – The first interview with Donald Trump since becoming President drew a 1.7 rating, the highest on the night. This also was enough for the network to win on the night.

The CW – Finally, the finale of “Frequency” drew a 0.3, an improvement over its last installment but hardly something that we foresee leading to it being granted another season moving into the future.
