People’s Choice Awards: Joel McHale skewers Blake Shelton, Fifth Harmony; opens with ‘Great Indoors’ cast

PCA -

Tonight, the People’s Choice Awards are airing on CBS, and we’re here to give you a few assorted updates over the course of the night, and that starts with an introduction from none other than your show host Joel McHale — who started the proceedings with a fun bit referencing his show “The Great Indoors.” There was also a mini-“Community” reunion given that Jim Rash turned up! We’re not sure how many PCA viewers are familiar with “Community,” but we enjoyed it given the sole fact that this is one of our favorite shows of all time.

Given everything that is going on in the world, we assumed that there would be some silly stuff coming up with Joel’s monologue, and there was as he skewered Fifth Harmony, Donald Trump, Blake Shelton, and a wide array of other topics. This was pretty vintage McHale, from the trademark snark to him commenting on how many awards Ellen DeGeneres has.

As far as openings go for awards shows, we’d say that Joel did a fine job with this, but most of his talent is that he can carry a show through from start to finish. He’s not someone who is going to give you a monologue that is necessarily shock you, but he’s got a super-fast wit and can pick up on events as they happen over the course of a show. He’s a very different sort of host than Jimmy Fallon at the Golden Globes, who was really great at the start of the show but isn’t the same sort of stand-up comedian who McHale is.

If there’s one thing that did surprise us about what we saw over the course of the monologue, it’s that Joel didn’t go harder — then again, this is CBS, so really in that way we probably should not be all that surprised by this. They have to appeal to all audiences to a certain extent, especially with this particular show (Joel even made a joke about the voting demographics during the opening).

You can watch part of the opening below.
