TV Underdogs: Where should ‘Supergirl’ season 2 take Winn Schott?

The second season of “Supergirl” is finally going to be returning to The CW with new episodes come Monday night, but before we get around to that, let’s focus in the latest edition of our TV Underdogs series on a guy in Winn Schott who definitely deserves even more love than he’s receiving on the series to date. After all, this is someone who maybe one of our favorite characters on the show, but there are still so much to do with him beyond what we’ve had a chance to see so far.

If you think about to season 1 in particular, there were some worthy Winn spotlights. We saw him his father for the first time (and wish we never had, given just how terrible this man really was), and we also saw a brief story where he professed his feelings to Kara, who did not feel the same way. These feelings haven’t been directly addressed since, but at the same time, we have a hard time imagining that they went away. He moved on eventually thanks to a relationship with Siobhan Smythe, but given that she became Silver Banshee, it’s fair to say that this didn’t work out very well for him, either.

As for season 2, to date some of the big highlights include him moving over to work at the DEO, him being a support system to all of his friends, and him working alongside James Olsen to give birth to the Guardian alter ego. While both of these stories are fun and have their moments, there is still something more that can be done with him that is isolated and more personal than anything that we’ve had a chance to see with him on the series to date.

What we’d like to see – It feels too easy to say “new love interest,” so what we’d prefer to see instead at this point is a chance to get to know more about Winn’s past, such as what his life was like before getting a job at CatCo, who are some other people connected to his childhood, or learn a little bit more about what his day-to-day life is like outside of the office. Also, it’d be nice to see him face an adversary that is similar in some ways to how the Calculator was for Felicity Smoak on “Arrow,” and therefore someone that only he is quipped to stop. With both Supergirl and Guardian, in many ways right now he’s firmly in the sidekick role — we know that he’s not the sort to be out there in the front lines, but we’d like to see his own heroism celebrated a little bit more and to see him be the impetus for saving the day. He’s the ultimate underdog, and that’s why it is so easy to room for him. (That’s also why he was perfect for this TV Underdogs article series we’re doing at present.)

Also, there is a part of us that wants to see an episode of him, Cisco Ramon, Felicity, and Nate Heywood all in the same room freaking out. We figure the end result of this would be the TV equivalent of what we’re doing with people on Twitter anytime there is an epic crossover between “Supergirl” and some of the other superhero shows on The CW. We just want to see more of a focus on him in general as we get further into season 2. There were so many other things to highlight during the first part of the most-recent season, and while that’s understandable, it’s time for Winn to have more time in the spotlight.
