‘Celebrity Big Brother’ Sunday: Are we in Hell, as well?

CBB -

For most of Sunday night’s new episode of “Celebrity Big Brother,” we spent a substantial amount of time focusing on the new twist: Watching a group of housemates in “Hell” where they faced a wide array of different challenges. Some of them were insulting, and some allowed a couple of people the opportunity to work their way out of Hell and back to the normal part of the house.

Now that we’ve seen the entire run of this weekend’s shows, there is one quick reaction that we have: Was this twist really that bad? Look at the Have-Not room on the American version of the show, or some of the costumes / food tasks / other punishments that we’ve seen there. Other than some insults, there didn’t seem to be anything all that miserable about this. These people are paid handsomely to be there, they still got to sleep in at least reasonable accommodations, and while the handcuffing part of this may not have been fun, it didn’t seem like anyone was tormented all that long.

Unfortunately, this weekend the show became the very thing that it often is not: Boring.

One of the biggest surprises of the night was to see Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt be branded as “disappointing,” and what we could be seeing as a result of that is one of the most notorious reality TV duos of all time in a little bit of a transition. There may be a couple of people in the house who aren’t fans, but they seem reasonably well-liked. The two are far more chill and relaxed than they need to be, and don’t seem to be nearly so intent on just dropping bombs and insulting people all of the time. Compare this iteration to Speidi to the version that we originally saw on “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here” in America several years ago and it’s almost night-and-day.

What also is hurting the show at present is that you’ve got several people who just aren’t bringing a whole lot to the table. Newcomer Jessica seems to be completely dull, Jasmine hasn’t done much other than complain about social media, and we continually get James J and Jamie confused. James Cosmo seems like a lovely man, but there’s nothing that he’s doing in terms of messing up the dynamic in the game. Jedward has their moments, but we’ve seen it all before.

As we get into the next week of the game, let’s hope for either another twist on Big Brother’s part or for some drama to really kick off other than Kim Woodburn getting snippy at people. In this iteration, the Weekend from Hell was almost more of an extended nap.
