‘NCIS’ season 14, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ season 3 will have crossover episode
It’s starting to feel like crossovers are a tradition between “NCIS” and “NCIS: New Orleans.” The two shows have done something together every year that they’ve been in fruition, and this year is no exception.
Today, CBS announced that there is one coming up for this season in the months ahead, which is exciting given that with all of the new “NCIS” cast members this season, there are opportunities for so many different dynamics and interactions that we haven’t seen to date. You’re also just getting the chance to see a case that is a little more epic than you get within a standard episode of either show.
There are multiple reasons for the network to want to do this, with one of the bigger ones being the simple fact that crossovers produce ratings. “NCIS” tends to draw better ratings than the spin-off, so in doing these two episodes together, the show’s improving their chances to get people watching both hours as opposed to just one. It’ll also be interesting to see what the show tends to do in terms of its scheduling. Maybe they are going to decide to air the two shows back-to-back and move “Bull” to 10:00 p.m. for the night; or, maybe this will be a week where they just have the Michael Weatherly show in repeats. This is not an issue that the series really had to worry about previously, since the two shows aired next to each other the past couple of years.
One other question that we’re left to wonder at present is if “NCIS: Los Angeles” will continue to be left out forever. There are some legal issues that have caused crossovers there to be challenging in the past, but we have seen smaller ones here and there — including Michael Weatherly appearing on the LA show just last season. For now, we assume the bigger issue being that the shows air on different nights, and it’s just easier to throw the flagship and the “New Orleans” shows together given that Gibbs and Pride are already close and they air on the same night.
