CarterMatt Awards 2016 results: ‘The Night Shift’ topples ‘Longmire,’ ‘Poldark’ for Underrated Show
Earlier this year, “The Night Shift” received some welcome news in the form of a season 4 renewal; hopefully, today’s news is the icing atop of what is already a very tasty cake: The series is the winner of our Underrated Show award!
In looking at the stats for this year’s CarterMatt awards, the NBC medical drama scored a pretty impressive victory in this category with more than 45% of the reader vote, which took place over the first few weeks of December. This was enough for the show to have more votes combined than “Longmire” (16.8%) and “Poldark” (16.2%), the two shows that were in second and third place.
So what made this show such an enormous hit with so many of our voters? We think that it all starts with that underdog spirit. When you have a show that has to fight its way sometimes to get a renewal, that inspires so much more passion and fire among the fans. It unifies them in a way that helps them forget about some of the smaller things like ‘shipping that can divide a fandom up, and they instead focus on the larger goal – getting their show the recognition it deserves.
Hopefully, winning the award this year will help to further inspire some more people to check out a show that has so much to offer. While you do have many of the landmarks that are present with other medical dramas, you’ve also got some wonderful performances from the cast, strong character moments, just the right amount of humor, and then also the perspective that simply comes from working at night. This, plus the flavor of having the show set in San Antonio, makes the show even more unique. There are moments that will make you cry as well as those that will make you smile and these characters are so very relatable.
The fourth season should premiere at some point in 2017, and given some of the season 3 cliffhangers, it can’t come soon enough. “The Night Shift” follows up “Hannibal,” which won this award in 2015.
Congrats again to all fans of “The Night Shift”!
