‘Sherlock’ season 4: Amanda Abbington discusses difficulties with Mary – John Watson scenes

Sherlock season 3Mrs. Carter: “Sherlock” is a show largely about overcoming challenges — but the challenges this time around were a little more personal.

While the fourth season of the show filmed many months ago, the news only very recently broke that series stars Martin Freeman (John Watson) and Amanda Abbington are no longer a couple. The two were together for fifteen years, and in an interview with the Telegraph in the UK, the actress shares that the two parties split a mere matter of weeks before filming began. Given that the upcoming season of the show features Mary and John getting accustomed to having a family, but also a great deal of discord between the two of them, she made it clear that the real-life circumstances caused the material to be all the more difficult to play:

“I love working with Martin, and we definitely would do again … But there were some pressure points in this episode where we thought, ‘Oh, are we doing the right thing here?’ The resounding answer was always yes.”

The best thing that we are hearing right now when it comes to the relationship between the two actors in real life is that the split seems to be an amicable one, given that they are on great terms and co-parenting their children effectively. We imagine that it may have helped them that they had a good bit of time to process what transpired in their relationship before having to go out and promote the show — had it been a little more sudden, they would having to be describing their heartbreak while it was still fresh or doing their best to try to cover it up.

The fourth season of “Sherlock” premieres on BBC One and PBS on New Year’s Day; there are three episodes to come, and given the nature of this world and some of the characters who are a part of it, it does feel like there is plenty of reason to fear for all characters.
