‘Sherlock’ season 4: Apparently, the dog was a nightmare
Speaking on “This Morning” to set up the new season, Amanda Abbington, who plays the character of Mary Watson, did her part to explain why the dog was there, but how terribly it worked out for much of the cast:
“In one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original books, there was a bloodhound, so Steven [Moffatt] thought it would be a good idea to get a real one, and it really wasn’t. It was terrible. He looked great but if you asked him to do anything, he was like ‘nope’ and just sat there.
“We were filming in Borough Market, with loads of people watching. I was having to film with Dexter, and I was pulling him so much I fell over.”
Apparently, they cast a dog who didn’t really love such a large active audience. Hey, not everyone can handle the pressures of fame and dealing with the crowds. It’s hard to be particularly upset with the dog, since it’s not like he bellowed out to everyone “I want to be in show business” before coming onto the show. The only real benefit that we get from knowing things like this is that it gives us a chance to have a fun little Easter egg to watch when the show returns on New Year’s Day — anytime the dog turns up, we know that handling him was about a million times harder than it appears on the surface.
