‘Blunt Talk’ canceled by Starz; no season 3 for Patrick Stewart series

While Starz had some high hopes for “Blunt Talk” upon initially ordering it, it now seems as though the show has a blunt ending. The recent season finale will now be a series finale, and it is effectively canceled. This comes as a blow to the premium cable network’s comedy lineup, but obviously, had the show performed better it would still be on the air.

The series starred Sir Patrick Stewart (whose name really needs no introduction) as Walter Blunt, a TV host who speaks his mind and gets himself in plenty of trouble in the process. For the most part, we did find the show to be plenty of fun, but it unfortunately ran into a little bit of a wall in that it couldn’t find a way to recruit new viewers into the mix. As a matter of fact, its recent season finale didn’t even crack 100,000 viewers in live+same day ratings or a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and it was down also more than 45% in total viewers in live ratings from season 1. Even on premium cable, not getting those numbers is going to signal a quick departure.

In a statement (per Deadline), Starz’s president of programming Carmi Zlotnik said the following:

“While Walter may not be returning to the airwaves, we are incredibly proud of the work that was done these past two seasons by our wonderful partners and collaborators on Blunt Talk, from Seth MacFarlane and our studio MRC, to our actors, writers and crew. It was a very special show with a heartfelt message. It was an honor serving you, Major.”

Hopefully, the show’s end does not cause Starz to reconsider anything in terms of continuing to think up interesting ideas for upcoming shows within the comedy genre. They’ve had something great with “Survivor’s Remorse,” and odds are that they’ll be able to come up with something else in the future.
