As ‘Scream Queens’ season 2 finale nears, what was crucial mistake?
In just over 24 hours, we are going to be getting once and for all the finale of “Scream Queens” on Fox, and this is absolutely a moment of excitement since we’ll finally get to see more of the inner machinations that went into this season’s plots and see hopefully an exciting conclusion to the story.
Yet, at the same exact time we are getting towards a point now where we have to start dissecting a few elements here and there of the story, and there is one very-simple reason for that: The ratings. Based on where we are right now, the odds are not exactly great at the moment that the show will be coming back for a third season. The ratings to a certain extent have always been a depressing thought with this series, given that with the cast it has assembled, you would assume that there would be numbers that would at least put the show more in the echelon of some of the other reasonable hits on network TV.
Yet, that hasn’t happened, and it was never like this show was a smash hit from the start, either. It’s never got a ton of attention, and we have to think there are a few reasons for that.
The genre – People do love comedies, and people also do love horror. However, people who like one don’t necessarily love the other, and in making this show so gory and yet silly, the series may have limited its potential audience almost from the start.
The network – In putting the show on Fox, it was far more difficult for it to be able to establish itself as edge or different. That may not have been the case if it had been given an opportunity to air somewhere else like on FX or another cable network. People in this demographic like to watch shows that push the envelope more than it was able to.
The setting – Given that there are so many hospital shows out there, we think in general that this setting does tend to turn people off, and ratings are down pretty substantially this season versus season 1.
Here’s what we do think: It’s not the cast or the writing that is forcing people away, since this show does have a tendency to be so smart and so biting. It’s just missing that something — and it’s hard to describe — that makes it a show that everyone has to watch on TV.
