‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off still be explored by HBO

LogoFor the time being, there isn’t an official spin-off, a prequel, or anything else when it comes to “Game of Thrones” coming onto HBO. Yet, at the same time,it does appear as though HBO is keeping its options open for as long as they possibly can.

In speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, the network’s CEO Richard Plepler made it very clear that they are still exploring as many different possibilities as possible for the future of the franchise:

“It certainly has not escaped [HBO president of programming] Casey [Bloys] and myself that there might be some brand extension [for GOT] that would be exciting. It certainly has not escaped the producers … Right now we’re focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect. We’re going to do that while at the same time parallel processing very embryonic stages of other possibilities.”

Do we think something is going to happen? Absolutely, even if it is from different producers or is just some sort of limited series. The reality here is that we’re looking at the most successful franchise in the history of premium cable television, and it’s delivered so much in terms of merchandising and also bringing attention to some of the network’s other shows. We don’t think that any future property would have the equal level of success (if the law of diminishing returns comes into effect here), but it would probably not matter. Even just half of the ratings of “Game of Thrones” proper would still be enough for the network to have an enormous hit on their hands.

For the time being, though, it’s easy to focus on what clearly worked, and that is a show that is still going to be on the air until most likely spring or summer 2018.
