‘Doctor Who’ season 10 will reportedly offer fresh start with Pearl Mackie’s arrival
We’ve yet to see a single second of footage of “Doctor Who” featuring Pearl Mackie as the new Companion, but suffice it to say, there is still a great deal of buzz around her appearance. The actress is presumably going to be appearing as the new Companion Bill at some point early on during season 10, and her appearance offers up the series an opportunity to do a wide array of different things — mostly notable, it’s a chance to see the show return to more of its roots.
In speaking further on this subject to Digital Spy, show executive producer Steven Moffat had the following to say:
“Because we’re going with a new companion for the new series, it sort of reboots Doctor Who back to its simplest, purest form, where it’s mad adventures with your nutty uncle from space.”
Moffat also added that Mackie helps to bring a very different dynamic with Peter Capaldi than what was there with Jenna Coleman, which does make some sense given that there was a “regal” energy that was about the former Companion — which makes some sense, Moffat says, given that she is now starring on the ITV series “Victoria” as the former Queen.
We’re all for a fresh take on “Doctor Who” at this point, especially if this does present a tremendous opportunity to usher in some new viewers. The thing that’s always been great about this series is its ability to hook new people along the way; almost everyone has a “first Doctor” as to when they started watching, and that accessibility should be something that never goes away. Granted, the series is a delicate balance between trying to appeal to some of these people, while at the same exact time also doing whatever you can in order to ensure that viewers who’ve been watching for a rather-long time also continue to feel as though some of their own unique needs are being met.
