‘Doctor Who’ 2016 Christmas Special video: Another look at ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’

Doctor who -Excited for the return of “Doctor Who“? Of course you are, we all are! It’s been an incredibly long time (a full year) since the series last aired with “The Husbands of River Song,” and we’re now looking forward to a special that looks and feels very different than any other we’ve seen before: “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”

The new preview below offers up a few quick looks at what to expect, including the return of Matt Lucas as Nardole from last year’s special. He in particular will be around for much of the upcoming season 10, a move considered to be a coup by showrunner Steven Moffat given his exceptional talent.

For those interested in some additional details, The Doctor will be traveling to Manhattan, where he will be looking to stop an alien threat. Along the way, he’ll team up with a journalist played by Charity Wakefield and potentially also a masked vigilante played by Justin Chatwin of “Shameless” fame. Is there something bigger at play here than how it looks on the surface? Probably, and we’re assuming that based mostly on the fact that it’s “Doctor Who.” When was the last time this show ever told a story that was largely straightforward? Pretty much never.

We find it best with these sort of stories that you don’t enter them with any huge expectations, and instead just focus on trying to enjoy what they bring to the table and how they make you feel. The majority of the Christmas Specials over the years have done a good job of providing a little bit of that holiday cheer and nostalgia, though the ones with a regeneration (we’re looking at you, end of Matt Smith’s reign as Eleven!) do end up getting rather emotional.
