Golden Globes 2017: ‘Stranger Things,’ John Turturro, Nick Nolte, Charlotte Rampling among surprises

Globes -

Just as there are always some snubs to be sad about at various awards shows, there are also a few surprises that put a smile on your face. These are what we want to focus on here more than anything else. It’s the most optimistic article of the morning … to a certain extent, because there are some nominees of the “really?” variety.

Specifically, look below at what made us smile during the Golden Globe nomination announcement.

Gina Rodrgieuz and Rachel Bloom – Sure, they were nominated last year, but who would’ve thought we’d get two years in a row of CW actresses getting the love?

Riz Ahmed and John Turturro – We assumed that it was one or the other for their work in HBO’s “The Night Of.”

Charlotte Rampling – The Globes may be some of the only people out there who remember firmly “London Spy.”

John Travolta – Maybe the Globes really wanted him in attendance, but we would’ve preferred Cuba Gooding Jr. if you’re going in the direction of nominating someone from “The People v. OJ Simpson” alongside Sterling K. Brown.

Nick Nolte – “Graves” was such an under-the-radar show that we certainly didn’t expect to see it get a nomination in any capacity — yet, here we are.

Billy Bob Thornton – His performance in “Goliath” managed to upset the apple cart in a number of ways in a very crowded Actor in a Drama Series category.

“Stranger Things” – While we knew that the Netflix series was a tremendous celebration of nostalgia, we weren’t sure entering the Golden Globes tonight that it would be recognized as award-worthy. Given all of the nominations for it, it feels clear that they’re in agreement with most viewers out there.
