Donald Trump continues ‘Saturday Night Live’ bashing, calls it ‘terrible’ in ‘Today Show’ interview

SNL -Yes, it’s true: We are really continuing a discussion about a President-elect spending his time bashing a lte-night comedy show. The war between Donald Trump and “Saturday Night Live” is an extremely odd one. This is a man who only hosted the show one season ago, and now he’s suddenly acting as though the entire show is somehow 180 degrees different and has no business being on the air anymore — even though, ironically, this has been one of the highest-rated seasons in years.

Trump spoke via the phone this morning to Matt Lauer on “The Today Show,” and when asked about the show, here’s just some of what he had to say:

“Well, I hosted [the show] when it was a good show, but it’s not a good show anymore … Nothing to do with me, there’s nothing funny about it. The skits are terrible. I mean, I like Alec, but his imitation of me is really mean-spirited and not very good. I don’t think it’s good. I do like him, and I like him as an actor, but I don’t think his imitation of me gets me at all — and it’s meant to be very mean-spirited, which is very biased. I don’t like it. So I can tweet that out.”

Sure, you can tweet it out, but should you? Taking politics aside, it feels like the best thing a political figure like Trump could do in this sort of situation is just laugh the impression off and get back to work. If you make it clear that the impression doesn’t get to you, then it becomes a little bit less of a story; because Trump seems to hate it so much, this is probably only going to continue to fuel the fire and make Baldwin want to continue to do it more.

Now that we’ve said that, we did comment in our review of this past episode that there are some elements of this impression that are getting old. Namely, there is really only so many times that we can see it before it doesn’t do anything for us anymore. Unless Trump does something crazy over the next few days, we’d put it on hold until at least the last show of the year, if not longer. (Photo: NBC.)
