‘The X Factor’ UK results: Was Matt Terry, 5 After Midnight, or Emily Middlemas eliminated before final?

5 AM -

Tonight, “The X Factor” had easily the most important results show of the season, as the field of four would be narrowed down to the field of three. Not only that, but this is the first time that we’ve genuinely felt like there was no clear pick in our head for who should go. There was no more Honey G, and no clear definition via past results as to who was going to be safe, and who was going to be going home.

The biggest surprise of all was learning that 5 After Midnight, one week after being in the bottom two, was sent through to the final before we even got to that point. Joining them was Saara Aalto, who is suddenly being favored by many out there to be the favorite to win the whole competition.

What this meant was that Matt Terry and Emily Middlemas were each going to be for the first time in the bottom two, and one of them would be leaving the show before the finale began. Maybe the two got a little complacent and didn’t take enough risks, whereas 5 After Midnight and Saara bounced back well after adversity. It’s hard to define the reasoning for this precisely, but there was a time when it felt like these two were locks to be finalists.

Matt Terry, “Hurt” – Didn’t love the song choice for him, given that we like him confident and not so emotionally vulnerable; if this was his first time doing this, it’d probably be a little bit different. His vocals, on the other hand, remain outstanding.

Emily Middlemas, “Wings” – Perfect song for her voice, but at the same time, her voice has more limitations that Matt. For the judges, we viewed this as a purely subjective decision since one of them isn’t necessarily discernibly better than the other.

The decision – Matt was sent through to the final, which wasn’t a big surprise — though we are shocked that the judges didn’t allow it to go to deadlock at this point. Emily’s got a chance at a career moving forward if she does really hone her songwriting skills. Matt, meanwhile, is probably the more “X Factor”-friendly act for the final.
