‘Sons of Anarchy’ spin-off ‘Mayans MC’ officially scores a pilot
We’ve been waiting for a rather long time now to be able to pass along further news regarding the much-anticipated “Sons of Anarchy” spin-off “Mayans MC”; suffice it to say, we’re pretty thrilled now.
Today, FX confirmed that they have ordered a pilot for the project, which will be directed by original series creator Kurt Sutter and is co-written by Sutter along with Elgin James, who will be a new creative visionary on the series. James spent a part of his life within a multi-ethnic gang scene in Boston, and as a result of that provides a unique perspective based on his experiences while also sharing a creative skill that he honed on projects such as “Little Birds.” (He also has “A Million Little Pieces” coming up on the film side.)
It may not be much, but FX was kind enough to share the following about the plot of the new series:
“Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.”
Given the setting for the series, we would assume that there could be opportunities for some “Sons of Anarchy” characters to eventually make their way into the series, even if that show was set by and large in northern parts of the state. This show will have its own voice and feel, but we wouldn’t imagine that the remaining characters within this world would vanish into thin air — even if they’re not geographically located in the same exact place. We’ll see what happens there — for the time being, we’re just thrilled to potentially be getting the series back. Having a pilot does not guarantee a series order, but given the strength of this franchise, we’re optimistic about the future.
Once there is further news to report on the prospective spin-off, including the latest on casting, we’ll have it for you here.
