‘Quantico’ season 2 winter finale: Show boss on the Alex – Ryan proposal
It was revealed well before Sunday night’s new episode of “Quantico” even aired that we were going to see Ryan propose to Alex — after all, it was even in some sneak peeks! What was a little bit more unknown was how exactly this said moment was going to be coming about. We saw that in the closing minutes of the episode, and while romantic, it also at the same time could prove problematic. These are people who are up to very different things, and have missions that are going to push them apart. In the future, we’re specifically going to see them operate on different sides.
So why even make that move right now? That is something that executive producer Josh Safran does his part to try and clear up further in a postmortem via Entertainment Weekly following the episode:
“We wanted to look at something different between them this year and at them trying to hold strong in spite of the fact that they were working together when they weren’t planning to. They haven’t gotten into any sort of petty disagreements, almost breaking up all year, [like] in the torture episode when Alex didn’t like the way Ryan behaved but even then they had a conversation about it. I do think that sadly in this particular moment, what’s motivating Ryan’s proposal is the fact that he just aided in killing a man and I think he is feeling like he desperately needs something good in his life to hold on to, and I think that is Alex, and that is probably the wrong reason to propose to somebody, and I think we’ll see what happens.”
This doesn’t exactly sound like a ringing endorsement, but you already know that it’s not. There should be some tremendous drama coming up down the road, and we are excited to see how all of this will play out provided that there is a clear direction for the future of these characters. We don’t want to be one of those people who claims that Alex and Ryan have to stay together, given that we trust the writers to chart the right direction. We just want to continue to see that their relationship matters.
