AMAs 2016: Selena Gomez delivers powerful acceptance speech; Green Day make a statement

AMAs -

Tonight’s American Music Awards broadcast did contain a few different moments that ran the gamut from funny to incredible to also emotional. We saw that early in the night courtesy of Lady Gaga performing “Million Reasons” and getting teared-up midway through it. As we neared the end of the night, we also saw it courtesy of Selena Gomez in an acceptance speech after winning her first award of the night.

“If you are broken, you don’t have to stay broken” was one of the pieces of advice she handed down during her speech, which came after she spent several months away from the spotlight working on herself. She proclaimed that years ago, she had everything that someone could possibly want, but was incredibly unhappy with herself in the process. She implored young women to share their hearts rather than their bodies, and work on caring for other people.

Ultimately, this was one of the most authentic and refreshing moments of the night, largely because so much of the AMAs is really all about superficial fluff, bright lights, risque outfits, and occasionally music. There aren’t too many opportunities to get into something deeper, and she made the most of this moment. We’re excited to see how she uses this as more of a launching pad for her future.

With that being said, we did also see tonight Green Day use their own time on the show to preach a message against Donald Trump, chanting “no Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!” during their performance. We can already imagine that there will be a few people out there who are upset about that (at the very least), but we will say that music and politics have shared an important relationship for decades. People upset about Green Day have to also be upset about the protest songs of the 1970’s.
