‘The Leftovers’ season 3 premiere still unclear as ‘Girls,’ ‘Last Week Tonight’ return dates announced
At the moment, the third season of “The Leftovers” is very much in limbo — not creatively, but just in terms of when it is coming to HBO with new episodes.
We were hoping by this point that we’d get further confirmation as to when the series is returning, but that hasn’t happened just yet. Instead, HBO earlier this week announced a few other shows that will be coming in the new year. For example, the sixth and final season of “Girls” will premiere on Sunday, December 12 starting at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. Following that, you’re going to have the return of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” the same day at 11:00. The next week (December 19), “Crashing,” a new comedy featuring Pete Holmes, is going to be premiering starting at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.
So when could we learn about “The Leftovers” in here? One thing that we should point out is that it’s very possible that the show could easily premiere starting at 9:00 p.m. Eastern in this lineup if HBO goes in that direction, though we know that they have some other projects coming up including “Big Little Lies” with Reese Witherspoon — which also already has a trailer out there.
At this point, we don’t care so much when “The Leftovers” comes out so much as that it does, and it has a reasonable campaign to help back it up. We made it very clear that the second season of the show was our personal favorite of anything that aired on TV in 2015, so we certainly hope and feel that the new batch is going to find a way to match this in one way or another.
